STEVE AUTEN is head of Taft's Pharmaceutical & Life Sciences Litigation practice area, as well as a firm of the firm’s Executive Committee. He is widely recognized in patent litigation, particularly Hatch-Waxman and biosimilar matters, and is followed by key industry leaders (brand and generic alike), law firms, analysts, educators, and others on his LinkedIn blog, "Hatch Waxman ANDA Litigation Forum" or HALF, which nearly 9,000 members worldwide. He currently represents clients primarily in the areas of Paragraph IV design strategies, Hatch-Waxman litigation, and biosimilar market opportunities. Prior to Taft, he led for several years the IP function for North America at Sandoz, a division of Novartis.

In addition to litigating Paragraph IV cases, Steve has served as a co-editor and chapter author on the following, leading treatises for pharmaceutical litigation: Pre-ANDA Litigation: Strategies and Tactics for Developing a Drug Product and Patent Portfolio, ANDA Litigation: Strategies and Tactics for Pharmaceutical Patent Litigators, and Evidence in Patent Cases.

Steve is recognized by Chambers USA as a top Intellectual Property attorney in Illinois, as well as by his peers in The Best Lawyers in America for IP Litigation, as an Illinois Leading Lawyer, an Illinois Super Lawyer in IP Litigation, and as a "World's Leading Patent Practitioner" by Intellectual Asset Management magazine. In 2018, Steve was also one of a handful of national finalists for LMG Life Sciences’ award of “Hatch-Waxman Litigator of the Year – Generic.”
