Bio

James V. Painter practices in the area of general civil litigation, with an emphasis on medical malpractice defense. The majority of his cases involve claims in the seven-figure range, with many seeking recoveries in the ten to one-hundred million dollar range. His practice also includes comprehensive general insurance defense, including suits involving allegations of premises liability, product liability, employment discrimination, defamation, breach of contract, health care litigation, medical product litigation, and automobile and trucking liability. He is the managing partner of the firm's Augusta office. Mr. Painter is a Board-Certified Diplomate in Medical Professional Liability by The American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys. He is licensed to practice law in Georgia, New York and South Carolina, and has represented hospitals, physicians, nursing homes, rehabilitation hospitals, dialysis centers and other health care providers throughout Georgia and South Carolina. He has also presented Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs to Georgia and South Carolina physicians, Grand Rounds at one of Georgia’s largest teaching hospitals, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminars to attorneys from several states. Mr. Painter has tried civil actions in both Georgia and South Carolina. He is admitted to practice before the trial and appellate courts in both states, as well as the United States District Court for the Southern and Middle Districts of Georgia and the United States District Court for South Carolina. Mr. Painter holds an AV Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating and has been designated as one of "America's Top Lawyers" now known as “The Best Lawyers in America” in the area of medical malpractice defense from 2009 - 2020. Mr. Painter has been recognized as a Super Lawyer by Georgia Super Lawyers magazine from 2011-2020. Mr. Painter earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 1991 from the State University of New York at Buffalo, with concentrations in accounting and finance. He received his juris doctorate in 1994 from the University of Georgia School of Law. Mr. Painter is a member of the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys, the Defense Research Institute, the Georgia and Augusta Bar Associations and the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association.
