Bio

Dan Norwood has been a public interest and employment law attorney in Memphis, Tennessee, for the past forty years. Over his career he has represented numerous individual whistle blowers and victims of employment discrimination, as well as the Memphis AFL-CIO Labor Council, the Memphis Education Association, the Memphis Newspaper Guild, and other labor organizations. He has received the highest “AV” rating a lawyer can receive in the national Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory of attorneys; and has been listed in Superlawyers and Best Lawyers in America in labor and employment law for over twenty-five years.
As a public interest attorney, Mr. Norwood has represented major corporations, national organizations and citizens groups in successfully fighting arbitrary and illegal government actions at both the national and local level. He has helped stop everything from federal regulations imposing unreasonable and expensive demands on businesses to unwanted garbage dumps, malls and cemeteries proposed to be built in residential neighborhoods. In his hometown of Memphis he has filed and won public interest lawsuits that on one occasion stopped the members of the Memphis City Council from illegally raising their pay and on another occasion forced the City to hold an election to fill a vacancy in the Mayor’s office.
After one of his successful public interest lawsuits, a local newspaper announced a “Dan Norwood Day” and he was featured on the cover of Memphis Magazine in 1987 as the “Giant Killer” for his successes in suing government and discriminating employers. In recognition of his service to the community in bringing public interest lawsuits he was also presented the “Liberty Through Law” award by the Young Lawyers Division of the Memphis Bar Association. He served for six three years as a hearing committee member of the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Tennessee Supreme Court.
Born in Memphis, Dan Norwood received his B.A. degree in International Studies and Political Science from the School of International Service at The American University in Washington, D.C. and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Memphis School of Law. While in law school, he received the “Outstanding Law Student” Award, was a member of the law school’s National Oral Advocacy Team, and was responsible for starting two programs to provide legal aid to those who could not afford to hire attorneys.
