Bio

Jim Barger, Jr. has recovered over $300 million for his clients and the United States and is among the nation's most recognized trial lawyers in the area of False Claims Act whistleblower litigation.  He served as lead trial counsel in the largest home health Medicare fraud case in U.S. history, recovering $150 million from Amedisys in 2014 and in the largest Medicare hospice case in U.S. history, recovering $75 million from Vitas Hospice and Chemed Corp. in 2017.

Jim is one of very few attorneys in the country ever tapped to serve as a private attorney general for the United States in a jury trial as part of a Department of Justice trial team and among an even fewer group who has also beaten the Department of Justice and won an award of attorneys' fees against the government at trial in bet-the-company litigation.  Admitted to the United States Supreme Court and multiple federal trial and appellate courts, Jim has litigated False Claims Act cases in every region of the United States.

In addition to his achievements as an active practitioner, Jim Barger, Jr. is a noted academic on the subject of False Claims Act qui tam litigation, having been published in Georgetown's American Criminal Law Review, the Tulane Law Review and others and having been cited in court pleadings and legal journals, including the Columbia Law Review, Cardozo Law Review, and others.  Currently, he serves as Adjunct Professor of Law for White Collar Practice and Whistleblower Litigation at the University of Alabama School of Law.

Jim also donates a large portion of his  time as an attorney to charitable efforts, including representing death row inmates pro bono on appeal.  In 2010, Barger achieved a reversal and new trial for James Allen Harrison, who spent more than a decade on death row in Alabama as a result of a wrongful capital conviction due to jury misconduct.
